Choosing a Solar PV Installer: Questions to Ask Before You Buy
TIM KRUSE, Owner, Green Light Renewables
Regardless of who you choose to install your system, asking these questions can help to ensure long-lasting quality and years of energy savings.
- Do you offer a free shade analysis and consultation?
- Do you have references from all types of systems (ground mounts, roof mounts, residential, commercial)?
- Is the bid you received based on your actual roof or an ideal south-facing roof?
- What is the cost per kilowatt hour? Beware of contractors who inflate the price to make your numbers look better. For example, if the price per kilowatt hour is 17 cents but your utility only charges 8 or 9 cents, then your estimated savings will look way better than they turn out to be.
- What are the advantages of going with a micro-inverter vs. a string-inverter system?
- Can you help with system monitoring?
- Can you help with permitting and utility hook-up?
- Can you show me the type of roof mount you use? Does it penetrate the roof?
- Where were the panels and inverters manufactured? What type of warranty is offered on each?
- Do you also offer an installation warranty? What are the specifics of your warranty?
- If I need warranty work in the future, will you be available?
- What state, federal or utility company tax credits and rebates are available in my area (for home or business)?
- Are you NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certified?
- Iowa adopted the 2020 NEC (electrical code). Will your installation comply with Iowa law?
Tip: Buy from an established local contractor. They will be around later if you need them.
